The Anand Karaj, meaning “Ceremony of Bliss,” is the traditional Sikh wedding ceremony. It takes place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, emphasizing that marriage is a spiritual union as well as a lifelong partnership.
During the ceremony, the couple sits before the Guru Granth Sahib while hymns (shabads) are sung. The most important part of the Anand Karaj is the four Laavaan—four sacred hymns that describe the stages of a married life, including commitment, love, trust, and spiritual growth. After each hymn, the couple walks together around the Guru Granth Sahib, symbolizing their shared journey through life.
The ceremony highlights equality, mutual respect, and devotion, reminding the couple to support one another and grow together in faith and purpose. The Anand Karaj concludes with a communal prayer and blessings for a joyful and harmonious married life.
